Your Day-By-Day Itinerary

Sunday, August 17                                                                          Junction City, KS

This morning we will leave with deluxe motor coach and travel through southern Minnesota and Iowa on the first leg of our Colorado Rockies Get-A-Way. Our luncheon stop will be in Des Moines, Iowa before heading to Kansas for our overnight stay at the Comfort Inn in Junction City, Kansas.

Monday, August 18                                                                        Colorado Springs, CO

After breakfast we will travel to Abilene, Kansas to visit the boyhood home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Here we will get a chance to visit the Eisenhower Museum plus the presidential library and stop by the final resting place of Dwight & Mamie Eisenhower and their son Doud. This morning we will continue onward through the wheat fields of Kansas with a lunch stop along the way before entering the great state of Colorado this afternoon. Our two-night stay will be in the picturesque city of Colorado Springs on the foot-hills of the Colorado Rockies at the Clarion Hotel Downtown.

 

Tuesday, August 19                                                                         Colorado Springs, CO

A local guide reveals the beauty of Colorado Springs. We will visit Garden of the Gods with its red-rock formations. We will tour the nation's Air Force Academy and chapel nestled at the foot of the Rockies. We will then see the Seven Falls. It has been called the “Grandest Mile of Scenery in Colorado”.

Wednesday, August 20                                                                   Pagosa Springs, CO

This morning experience Pikes Peak Cog Railway, all 14,100 feet up to the top of the peak. Late this morning we will depart Colorado Springs for the Royal Gorge. Enjoy the breathtaking view of the highest suspension bridge in the world, rising 1,053 feet above the rapids of the Arkansas River. Ride the aerial tram across the gorge or take the incline railway to the bottom of the canyon or just walk across the bridge to take in the majestic views. Cross the continental divide on Wolf Creek Pass on our way to Pagosa Springs, where we will be staying at the Pagosa Lodge.

Thursday, August 21                                                                     Cortez, CO

This morning we will continue on .to the city of Durango for shopping and lunch. This afternoon we will visit the Mesa Verde National Park with its amazing cliff dwellings of the Pueblo Indians, dating back to 1300 AD. A park guide will enhance the experience with fascinating stories of the last civilizations. Tonight we will be staying at the Comfort Inn in Cortez, Colorado.

Friday, August 22                                                                       Grand Junction, CO

After a short drive to Durango we will board the Silverton, the last scheduled narrow gauge railroad in the United States. This coal-fired passenger train rails along the canyons of the La Plata and the San Juan Mountains. See the breath-taking scenery as we wind around mountain peaks, canyon walls, and rushing streams enroute to Silverton, once a bustling mining town in the I 870s. After a short stop in Silverton our motor coach will take us on the Million Dollar Highway over the Red Mountain Pass of San Juan Mountains to Grand Junction where we will be staying at the Grand Vista Hotel.

Saturday, August 23                                                                  Avon-Beaver Creek, CO

This morning we will drive along one of America’s most scenic drives, the Rim Rock Drive. This 23-mile route affords magnificent views as the road skirts the edges of the canyon, which can be more than 500 feet deep. After leaving the Colorado National Monument Park we will drive along the Colorado River and through Glenwood Canyon to Glenwood Springs for our lunch break. After lunch we will travel to Avon-Beaver Creek, dropping off our luggage at the hotel before driving through the Alpine village of Vail, Colorado. Here we will enjoy the unique shops and the delightful cafes that outline the streets. We will return to Avon for our evening stay at the Comfort Inn.

Sunday, August 24                                                                  Estes Park, CO

Today the scenery is great with sweeping vistas of deep mountain canyons and valleys. We will travel along Trail Ridge Road, winding through the magnificent Rocky Mountain National Park. We will cross the mighty Continental Divide while passing landscapes that will grab your attention. As we descend upon Estes Park,  a charming mountain village nestled at the edge of spectacular Rocky Mountain National Park, our hotel, Best Western Silver Saddle awaits you. Tonight you will be treated to a Western Chuck Wagon Dinner & Show.

Monday, August 25                                                               Grand Island, NE

As we depart our hotel, the Rockies will fade into the distance behind us so that we can begin our journey home. Enjoy the passing landscapes as we travel to Nebraska. After lunch we will follow the pioneers; journey along the Great Platte River Road and make a stop at the Archway Monument. This interactive journey will allow you to join exhibits to experience a prairie crossing, a buffalo stampede and a stop-over at a frontier fort. Our evening stay will be in Grand Island, Nebraska.

Tuesday, August 26                                                                Home

Our last day you will have the choice of relaxing at the hotel or a tour of the Case-IH New Holland Combine Factory, following the combines down the assembly line. After the tour we will travel through Omaha, Nebraska, into Iowa and finally Minnesota, while we reminisce about the sites that we have seen of the majestic Colorado Rockies with our new found friends.
