Mackinac Island

And the Agawa Canyon Train Tour

September 19 – 24, 2011

Day By Day Itinerary

Monday, September 19                                                           Marquette, MI

Our early morning departure will find us leaving southern Minnesota and driving through the state of Wisconsin with a lunch stop along the way. Our overnight stay will be in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the port city of Marquette.

Tuesday, September 20                                                           Sault Ste. Marie, MI                A picturesque drive along-side Lake Superior is ours today with a lunch stop in Sault Ste. Marie.  Later this afternoon we’ll enjoy a unique experience while touring the locks of Sault Ste. Marie on a two-hour boat cruise.  Watch in amazement as huge freighters, almost within reach, travel the seaway through ports at one of the busiest lock systems in the world.  Our home for the next two evenings will be at the Hampton Inn at Sault Ste. Marie.

Wednesday, September 21                                                       Sault Ste. Marie, MI                All Aboard!  Passports or passcards are required today as we cross the Canadian Border.  We will board the Agawa Canyon Tour Train for a full day excursion, traveling 114 miles north into the Canadian Shield, where you will witness pristine northern lakes and rivers, awesome formations of granite rock and mixed forests.  Once in the Canyon you will have two hours to explore trails, discover waterfalls, or hike to a breathtaking lookout.  The ride is comfortable, the scenery unmatched and the experience thoroughly relaxing with an included lunch on the train.  After the train excursion we will return back to our hotel in Sault Ste. Marie.

Thursday, September 22                                                         Mackinac Island, MI

This morning we have a one hour drive to the Mackinac Bridge.  We will arrive in St. Ignace, Michigan for a picture stop before boarding the ferry to Mackinac Island.  Our home for the evening will be at the Murray Hotel on Mackinac Island, located right in the middle of the shopping district.  A horse-drawn carriage will be awaiting you for a two-hour tour of the island.

Friday, September 23                                                                       Harris, MI

Continental breakfast will be offered at the hotel in the morning.  There is ample opportunity to rent a bicycle built for two and explore the island, go for a walk, sample the taffy, fudge and ice cream or finish your last minute shopping.  Around noon we will depart the island by ferry, carrying us to Michigan City where we will board the motor coach. Be sure to have your cameras ready as we drive across the Mackinac Bridge and begin our afternoon while entering the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our evening stay will be at the Chips Casino, Harris MI, just west of Escanaba.  This evening you will have the opportunity to enjoy the motel or explore the casino for some gaming fun.

Saturday, September 24                                                                       Home

As we go "All Aboard" the motor coach on the last day of our tour, we will travel through Wisconsin with a lunch stop in Eau Claire. It seems impossible that in just six days, our excursion has taken us to the Packer State, the busy Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, across the Canadian Border by train, on the ferry to a step back in time on beautiful Mackinac Island, and homeward to southern Minnesota with a collection of new friends and treasured memories.
